👉 Human beings are inherently ambitious creatures. Their inclination mostly lies in the direction where their importance and influence are perceived to grow. One way to achieve this is for individuals to enhance their wealth of virtues and elevate their character above the average level. True happiness and genuine peace are found therein, but it seems difficult. It appears easier to improve one’s worldly status and to be attracted by material possessions and conveniences. Formal respect is also received, which gives a sense of satisfaction in scratching the itch of ego. However, no matter how much progress is made in the field of affluence, contentment is not achieved, because the boundary of ego keeps expanding. Seeing thousands of others in a poorer state than oneself, there is a momentary satisfaction in comparing oneself as better off. But when prosperous individuals start appearing, it pricks the bubble of one’s ego and creates more restlessness within.
👉 Activities centered around considering wealth as the focal point are similar in nature. If attention is focused on making one’s personality virtuous, along with worldly recognition, one can attain self-contentment and peace. However, if one makes their ego the center, the pursuit of prosperity leads to an insatiable desire for recognition and undesired behaviors. This misjudgment has led to the prevalence of unethical practices and false behaviors in society.
👉 Witnessing others being respected for their prosperity, even those who were following the ideal of “simple living, high thinking” or who had the courage and patience to be content with available resources and bring improvement in their condition through hard work and perseverance, many in society have started adopting unethical, dishonest, and undesirable tactics. The essential importance of human qualities has been overshadowed by the lure of material possessions. This fact has been forgotten: self-contentment is the foundation of life, spiritual progress is the true goal, and “improvement of qualities” is the true earning. “Wealth” is merely a small “means” for livelihood. The “end” is the accomplishment of human dignity and pride.
