Simplicity Is Not A Hindrance To Progress

👉 There are some thinkers who consider simplicity as an impractical principle and deem it as a hindrance to progress. They argue that if individuals limit their needs and find contentment with available resources, human civilization’s progress will stall. Because then, humans will cease to innovate, and efforts towards progress and development will diminish. Essentially, these contemplators fail to grasp the true essence of “simplicity”. Simplicity does not mean being idle after fulfilling necessities nor refraining from striving for further progress.

👉 The essence of “simplicity” is a mindset that finds happiness in living according to one’s capabilities and strengths. This sentiment is beautifully expressed by Tulsidas in a metaphorical manner, illustrating that even though one may desire nectar, they may be incapable of churning it like buttermilk. Increasing one’s needs to the extent that available resources cannot fulfill them leads to “discontentment”. Pursuing progress with a dissatisfied mindset makes it impossible to find happiness and remain content amidst efforts. It’s crucial to understand that “contentment” entails maintaining a peaceful state of mind, expressing gratitude towards available resources, and consistently striving for progress.

👉 “Contentment” is a disposition that, when manifested in simplicity, bears fruit both externally and internally in life. Both are interlinked like a seed and a tree, wherein peace, stability, happiness, and joy flourish. It can be confidently stated that individuals embracing “simplicity” can contribute to societal development.

👉 Some argue that adopting such simplicity will regress humanity to primitive ages. However, even the tools provided by science would become obsolete. Those embracing simplicity might ponder, “What’s the use of a motor when one can walk? Is it necessary to wear a watch when people used to work daily without it? Can clothes not be washed without soap?”

👉 However, this is not the meaning of “simplicity”. Embracing a thoughtful perspective does not hinder the use of objects or tools; it simply alters the mindset and makes tools even more useful.
